Blogging from the Heart Writing Tour

Blogger extraordinaire, Stephanie Neighbour, tagged me to participate in the Blogging from the Heart Writing Tour, giving me a chance to share with you my next work in progress. If you have not yet visited Stephanie’s blog, you are not only missing out on a great chuckle, but also a unique insight into human behavior. Stephanie is not afraid to poke fun at herself, which is probably why we get along so well, and through her quirky introspection help us to see a side of life we may have been avoiding. Thanks, Stephanie, for your writing as well as giving me this opportunity to talk about my next novel.

What am I working on?
With Losing Faith fresh off the presses so to speak, my mind has gone to another series of a kinkier nature. While there will be more in the Rutherford Series–the next one will follow Morgan Brewer in Roll the Dice–my creative side has delved into a new series called The Society of Thorns. The first book in this series is titled Surrender and will follow Virginia Hart as she discovers the BDSM world through Jaron Towers.
How does it differ from others in the genre?
Someone wrote to me about Losing Faith, “What I love about your book is the depth of the emotion and characters. The majority of erotic novels don’t have it and they are just quick reads.” Another person said, “There’s actually a story. If you take the sex out, it’s still a great book.” And that’s my main goal, to write where sex is a part of the story and not the reason for it.

In Surrender, I go deeper than the kink. It’s a story about master-slave relationships and the protocols that trigger the mind, which then triggers the body. The mind is the sexiest part of the body to me and that is what I intend to explore with this series. I try to steer away from the feeling that “this story could only happen in books.” There is a real world out there where this happens and that is what I want to delve into. Of course, for story-telling purposes, I’ve added some intrigue by creating a secret society with rituals and initiations. This is fiction after all and we need some excitement outside of the sheets. How people handle relationships intrigues me. I find if you explore that, then everything else falls into place.

Why do I create/write what I do?
I think I answered some of this in the previous question. Relationships come in all shapes and sizes. The household of the 50s has evolved and people are more open now about how they live their lives than ever before and who they love. I want to dig into those worlds and see where the journey takes me. I write first to discover and then to share.

How does my writing/creative process work?
Sometimes like a blender on its highest setting and sometimes like molasses. I tend to work on a few projects at once. My mind jumps around quite a bit and I’ve discovered that by having a few irons in the fire, I always have something to jump to in order to keep moving forward. My mind will get fired up about a storyline and I’ll run with it, usually knowing where I am going but not how I will wind up there. I have scenes in my head–and yes, sometimes I jot them down–that I want to include, but when the characters take over, the story dictates whether they will be in the final draft or not.

I also write everything free hand. I have three 3-subject notebooks where the stories begin that I carry around in a satchel wherever I go. I love seeing things come to life with ink. Plus, it’s easier to carry around than a laptop. Quicker, too.

So, that’s what’s on deck and my imagination’s focus currently. It’s going to be exciting to see the series unfold and develop with what’s already in my mind. I hope you join me for the journey. Until then, check out Losing Faith and see how Faith and Selby Greer handle an open marriage.
